If you are a Christian and you find yourself hating Kichijiro (it happen to me). I think you don´t undertand Christianity very well (i did not, i do a little more now). If you are a Catholic and you think that you are a better Christian than Kichijiro, and that kichijiro deserve hell or something like that... Dude, you have a problem.

Once a priest, always a priest. The sacramental powers of a priest lie not in the merits of the person of the priest but only in the infinite grace of God. That is why no errors or wrongdoings of a priest, no matter how grievous or despair they are, can limit the love and mercy of God flowing through the sacraments.

In the book there are many beginning and end notes quotations from real historical documents that on the surface seem insignificant and mere data, but if you read all the historical accounts quoted you will see that there were secret Christians preaching and teaching under the very noses of the Japanese government and the Gospel was spreading in an Underground Church thru these men.

I saw this movie ten times and cried every single time. Andrew Garfield deserves to win the Oscar for this portrayal of Padre Rodrigues. I felt so deeply moved I started going on Ignatian Spiritual Retreats and doing the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola and continue to do them. I can never thank Martin Scorsese and Andrew Garfield enough for making this Masterpiece! I read the book also and it is a bit different than the movie at times. It’s a great challenge to Christians to remain faithful to the end. I repeatedly questioned myself, “What would I do in this situation?” “What have I done for Christ? What am I doing for Christ? What will I do for Christ?”

Kichijiro on his knees with his eyes opened depicts he's in fear, not knowing whether Rodriguez will hear his confession as a priest or send him away and even possibly report him to the inquisitors. Him calling Rodriguez 'Padre' was an act of great courage showing that he's chosen God once again.

Kichijiro is actually a great Christian! We know for a fact that we are but human beings - we fall and sin. However, God does not condemn us when we fall or sin, He condemns us if we don't get back up and ask for His help. And that's what makes Kichijiro a great Christian: he always got back up and sought for God's help no matter how many times and no matter how grave he has fallen into sin.

He describes his pain not as fear of hellfire but as a pain for having betrayed his friends. Perhaps he does fear punishment but the film shows that initially he is a broken man from the trauma of watching his family be massacred. He uses his religion to escape the consequences and pain of his actions. Here however at this end of his journey through life he has put himself back together (as best he can) but carries the pain of what he has done. He acknowledges the evil he has committed and asks for forgiveness. He seeks connection and acknowledgement that he truly feels ashamed of what he done. And as both a priest and human being Rodriguez beautifully forgives him. Finally at the very end when he is caught with the icon of Christ which was likely given to him by Rodriguez he chooses to accept being executed. His old version would've saved himself and maybe even lied that Rodriguez gave it to him if he didn't. As a reformed man fighting his devils now he accepts his end with grace. Showing spiritual strength and human goodness. I am an atheist and I can acknowledge all of this. This film is so multi dimensional as was the book and if anyone's take away is that "Japanese could never be true Christians" or that "the missionaries are actually insidious" or some other drivel you are missing the point entirely. It's a deeply human story about the trappings of faith and spirituality but also its beauty and deep connection to the nature of people.

Hence the depth, beauty and mystery of this faith. One can know, study, teach and even give all for the propositions - but salvation by grace and mercy. The silence of the lamb as we continue babble and stumble. This is transcendent.

“Katallage” is the Greek word used to describe “a catalyst for coming back from estrangement,” “reconciliation.” When William Tyndale was translating the Bible, he needed a word that best conveyed that, so he created the word Atonement, or at-one-ment. “It is not possible for you to sink lower than the infinite light of Christ’s Atonement shines.” -Jeffrey R. Holland.

    • @thomashenry4798

That is the essence of Faith. This is what it means to be a Christian. To love one another, to sacrifice everything to save even a single soul from suffering and torment. Even if you must carry your faith alone in your heart, and pray alone in the dark place of your home with the shutters closed and the doors barred. For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son. People take so much pride in being a Christian, that to publicly deny Christ is a humiliation in their eyes. But even Peter was told by Jesus he would deny Christ three times before the cock crowed. Peter was so proud he told Jesus he would never do such a thing. His faith was absolute. The angry mob came to Peter and asked if he knew Jesus. He grew afraid and denied him three times. Jesus did not hold the act against him, Peters faith was not weak, nor did he not believe. Jesus did not hold the act against him or tell him he risked his soul. It was all part of the will of God, for God loves his children first and foremost. If we must deny Christ on the street corner, and pray in secret in the home and in the tombs and catacombs, then that is simply the Cross we have been given to carry.

@@thomashenry4798 "But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven." Your interpretation simply doesn't work. It was definitely considered a bad thing for Peter to deny Christ. The reason Christ didn't threaten Peter with hell, is because Peter is not saved because of righteous actions, but because of his faith in Jesus. Same goes for Rodriguez in Silence. By snuffling out the Christian movement, he made life tough for the Kakure Kirishitan for centuries to come. It's not considered a good thing, but he is still forgiven. Christ gave the Great Commission when He rose, and that we to let God be known to all people. Obviously by denying Christ you're working against the Great Commission.

The scene moved me in such a way that I meditated on it for a long time. God was never absent and yes I will say silence can drive anyone mad but God was always there. Rodrigues came to admire what he thought was his enemy and thats the teaching of redemption. Though he thought he was fallen Kichijiro believes otherwise which brings together the true nature behind the Gospel. Love.
